In 1896 he retired on the business being transferred to its present position in Fawcett St. All his spare time was devoted to christian work among the poor and for 40 years he was a regular visitor to the Infirmary, Workhouse (teaching workhouse children) and the Monkwearmouth Hospital. Also a regular visitor to the Barracks and the ships in the docks, and had been looked up to as a friend of the poor in the East End of the town. An active member of the Bethesda Free Church for over 40 years. He leaves a widow and grown up family of nine, one of his daughters being a missionary in India.
