Also in F1500 was Julia E Binns age 23, born Indiana [First wife?] 1880 US Census married head at Rossville, Shawneee, Kansas, age 47, carpenter 1883 William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas: RICHARD BINNS, contractor and builder, the only contractor in the town, came to Rossville in March, 1871, and has been constantly engaged in his trade. Has built most of the business houses and residences in the place. In 1881 did $12,000 worth of work and has done more than that in former years. Employs five and six carpenters. Came to the State in 1870 and located in Topeka and came from there direct to Rossville. Was Justice of the Peace for two years and is a member of the School Board. Built the first government building on the Pottawatomie Reserve at a cost of $4,000. Was born in Fayette County, Pa., January 18, 1834. Remained in native county until about ten years of age. Moved to Harrison County, Ohio, and remained until twenty-one, learning his trade and attending the Friends' boarding school at Mount Pleasant, Ohio, two years. Went to Richmond, Ind. and remained working at his trade, until coming to Kansas. Was married at Richmond, Ind., November, 1852, to Miss Elona Hall, of that place. Has five children - William H., now milling in Jefferson County; Horace M. and Frank, working with their father; Anna Laura and John B. Mr. B. is a member of the Hesperian Lodge, No. 111, A. F. & A. M., Rossville. Is P. M. of that lodge. Is a member of Friends' Church, Lawrence, Kan. Was a delegate to the Republican State Convention in 1882, and has always worked with the Republican party. 1905 Biography by James L King: Our subject lived in Fayette County, Pennsylvania, and then in Harrison County, Ohio, until 21 years of age, having attended school in the latter county and learned the carpenter's trade. He then went to Richmond, Indiana, and there worked at his trade until 1870, when he came to Topeka. In March, 1871, he settled at Rossville, where he engaged in a hardware business for six years, and has continued to follow contracting and building until the present time. He has carried out a number of very important contracts, one of these being the first government building which was erected on the Pottawattomie reservation, which cost $4,000. In his earlier ears he also taught school, and for the past 20 years has administered the law as a magistrate at Rossville, to the entire satisfaction of all concerned. In 1855, in Indiana, Mr. Binns married Elma H. Hill, who is a daughter of Harmon and Mary (Henley) Hill, and they had six children, namely: Mary, wife of Elias J. Burton, deceased in 1876; William A., a resident of Los Angeles, California, married first to Anna Esson, and second, to Anna Higgins; Horace M., deceased, who left four children,Grace E., Nellie, Ethel and Charles, who reside with their mother at Rossville; Frank N., residing in Los Angeles, California, who married Anna Mary Wilt and has one daughter; Anna Laura, who married Charles Smiley and died leaving two children,Ruth and Ray; and John B.,who died when 27 years of age. Politically, Mr. Binns is a staunch Republican. He has been a Mason and an Odd Fellow for many years. He is a member of the Presbyterian Church.
