[1841 census has an entry that could very well be our Joseph in Ashton under Lyne. This is in fact Stalybridge and the family are living in Mount Street, no number is given. It shows John Binns aged 65 as head of household, his occupation is a water carrier. His wife is named Hannah aged 55, Joseph listed as a mechanic is aged 20 but ages were generally rounded down to the nearest 5 years. Mary Binns is aged 20 also and living with them is a Hannah Harrop also aged 20. Both Mary and Hannah were listed as weavers. Only John was born in Lancashire, the rest have stated that they were born in another county. Am certain this is our Joseph who married Martha Gatley in 1943 in nearby Mottram as it was literally just around the corner from Stamford Street where Martha lived with her family in 1841.
He married Martha Gatley on 12th February 1843 at Mottram Parish Church.
Details from certificate: Joseph Binns - 27 - bachelor - mechanic - Mottram - father John Binns - clothier, Martha Gatley - 25 - spinster - Mottram - father John Gatley - policeman, the witnesses were Willam Harrop and James Cooper.Between marrying in February 1843 until 1848 I am unable to ascertain where they lived. Joseph first appears in trade directory in 1848 in Manchester living at 8 Division Street. Their first child Hannah was born and baptised at Manchester Cathedral in 1849, they were living at 11 Charles Street, where Joseph was listed as a mechanic. John Gatley Binns was born in 1850 and baptised at the Cathedral. He was their only son. Sarah Jane was born in 1858 and baptised at the Cathedral. Trade directories for 1854/56 show them at 26 Juno Street and by 1861 they were living at 19 Chapman Street. The 1851 census is unreadable but 1861 census confirms the above facts. Joseph died in 1866 aged 50. Children were 18, 16 and 9, Martha moved back to Stalybridge where she had lived from 1833 till her marriage in 1843. Some of her siblings were still living there. Joseph was buried in grave number 59/35 in St Lukes Church graveyard in Cheetham Hill on 25th August 1866 and the address was 67 Reather Street. I presume the grave was bought for Joseph as there are no previous burials with this grave number. He was 50 years old and the burial service was performed by the rector of St Peter's, Oldham Road, the Rev H Whylock-Davis.]
